The mission of Warming Room Community Ministries (WRCM) is to nurture a community that challenges homelessness, food insecurity, and social exclusion in the City of Peterborough by responding to immediate needs, breaking down barriers amongst us and advocating for systemic change. Our staff are a kind, thoughtful, and eclectic team that are intentional in pursuing their vision for a more just world. This is emotionally challenging work. Ministry Position Title: Relief Staff

Term of Office: Commencing immediately. Indefinite term, on casual basis. No specific number of shifts or hours are guaranteed.

Supervision and Support: These positions will support The Warming Room (an emergency shelter program) and One Roof (a community centre and meal program). Relief Staff will be assigned to one program or the other; in your cover letter, please advise which program you are interested in supporting. The position will report to the Program Coordinator.

Purpose of the position : The Relief Staff`s role is to support Warming Room or One Roof by working Supervisor shifts when other staff are unavailable due to vacations, holidays, illness or other reasons. No specific number of shifts or hours are guaranteed. The Relief Staff person will keep WRCM advised of their ongoing availability and will be expected to accept shifts offered within that availability. Availability and flexibility will be factors in selecting and retaining candidates for these positions. Shifts at Warming Room will generally be between 8:45 p.m. and 9:30 am. (and may be 2.5, 6 or 12.5 hours long). One Roof shifts will generally be between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. and of various lengths. Shifts may be offered any day of the week.

Population(s) served: Warming Room guests – People who have found themselves homeless from ages 18 and up. One Roof community members – People who have found themselves food insecure and/or subject to social exclusion.

Warming Room Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a safe environment within the shelter
  • Supervising set-up. tear-down and clean-up.
  • Supervising delivery of food.
  • Supporting volunteers in the shelter
  • Ensuring rules are being followed in the shelter.
  • Responding to incidents and issues involving guests or volunteers as they arise.
  • Completing initial and ongoing training.
  • Documenting incidents and maintaining required records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

One Roof Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervising daily set-up and clean-up.
  • Supervising preparation and service of meals.
  • Supporting delivery of programming.
  • Maintaining a safe environment within the community centre.
  • Supporting volunteers in the community centre.
  • Ensuring rules are being followed in the community centre.
  • Responding to incidents and issues involving guests or volunteers as they arise.
  • Completing initial and ongoing training.
  • Documenting incidents and maintaining required records.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Current First Aid, NVCI, Safe Talk and Safe Food Handling certifications would be an asset
  • Flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to new situations and teamwork settings
  • A passion to work with marginalized people.
  • A compassionate outlook and caring disposition.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills
  • A strong sense of self-awareness, of strengths, weaknesses.
  • Training and/or experience in working with marginalized people.
  • The ability to lead others.

  • Experience in working with volunteers.
  • The ability to set and maintain personal and professional boundaries.
  • The ability to take initiative as well as work in a team environment.
  • Prior volunteer or placement experience at WRCM would be an asset

Support, Supervision and Evaluation:

  • Occasional evaluation and collaborative goal-setting with Program Coordinator(s) and Director.
  • Occasional participation in staff meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in ongoing training and education events.

Limits of the position:

  • Comply with the Responsible Ministry: Screening in Faith Policy, Diocese of Toronto’s Sexual Misconduct Policy and must clear CPIC check.
  • Comply with all policies governing confidentiality.

Terms of work/service: No particular or minimum hours of work are assured. Hours worked will be compensated at $18.50 per hour plus vacation pay, less deductions. There are no health benefits available in this position.

  • Diocesan Sexual Misconduct training
